| pt_BR |
xmlui.metadata.dc.description.abstract | Between 2000 and 2016, women's participation in Brazilian municipal legislatures increased from 11.5% to 13.5%. But this increase was not uniformly distributed throughout the national territory. This newsletter analyzes descriptive data about a rate of elections of women for the office of councilwoman, relating two demographic aspects: (a) size of the municipality; (b) region of the country. We found that, unlike the postulate as our hypothesis, the chances of women are inverse to the size of the city. Cities up to 20,000 voters are where they are more elected, followed respectively by bands from 20 to 50 thousand, from 50 to 200 thousand and, lastly, more than 200 thousand voters. This pattern is maintained unchanged from 2000 until 2016. The fact of this pattern is to maintain by all five elections indicates a system characteristic. The regional aspect have gone through some changes in the analyzed period. Northeast and north are the regions where women are most elected, while southeast, throughout the period, remains in the last place, as in the region that least elects women. The most visible change in the period was the southern region, which until 2008 was similar to the southeast, but since 2008, the percentage of women elected has risen to second place in 2016. Finally, we suggest that the data seem to indicate that the explanation for such patterns may rely in other variables, such as degree of political competition, campaign cost, access to financial resources and other aspects already studied by other researchers. | pt_BR |
