Ancient greeks and romans envisioned the relationship between ethics and politics as being part of a comprehensive and vast educational project. In their view, the main goal of political institutions and the government was to achieve virtue by means of education. Their political philosophy was therefore pragmatic because since primordial times their primary concern had been the education of citizens and the improvement of their character, key ingredientes to individual and collective self-fulfilment within the polis. Aristotle believed virtue was achieved through practice and not through theory. As he put it, virtues were habits acquired through practice; one became virtuous by acting virtuously. Aristole was aware of the fact that polis-related activities that were responsible for individual happiness depended on the acquisition of a set of habits and values. Hence he claimed that socialization (ethismos) and education (paideia) should be the legislator's main concerns. The
noblest aim in life was therefore to strive to achieve the common good (koinon) of the political community (koinônia), whose stability was reinforced by the communal spirit uniting all the citizens.
