O que se observa é uma sociedade cada vez menos branca, devido às imigrações e ao aumento dos casamentos inter-raciais. Em razão do crescimento dos chamados 'latinos' nos últimos anos na sociedade americana, o voto deste grupo ganhou importância no jogo político, ao ponto de poder se tornar o fiel da balança nas eleições nacionais. A importância dos latinos neste contexto que cerca as eleições presidenciais americanas de 2008, que colocou frente a frente o senador democrata Barack Obama e o senador republicano John McCain, se deveu, de um lado, ao fato de que esse eleitor não demonstrava compromissos históricos rígidos com nenhum partido, como os negros possuiam; de outro lado, ao fato do eleitorado se concentrar em cinco estados onde seu voto poderia ser decisivo para conceder a vitória aos democratas ou republicanos no colégio eleitoral. Com base em resultados de surveys, análise da cobertura da imprensa e em estudos sobre o comportamento político segundo raça nos USA, este artigo avaliou, antes do desfecho desta histórica eleição, o peso político do voto latino na corrida eleitoral, observando a agenda deste grupo e o que lhes ofereciam Obama e McCain.The United States has today different demographic profile from the 1960s, when black people were fighting for the right to vote and to share the same public spaces of their white patrician. What we see now is an increasingly less white society due to intensive immigration processes and interracial marriages. Owing to the recent growth of so-called Latinos in American society, Latin vote has gained such a significant importance that it may become decisive in national elections. The importance of Latino votes in this scenario of uncertainty surrounding the U.S. presidential election - that places face to face the democratic senator Barack Obama and the Republican Sen. John McCain - is given by the fact that Latin voters do not show rigid historical commitments with any party as black people do, and by the fact that the electorate is focused on five states which can be decisive to elect either Democrats or Republicans. They are a group susceptible to persuasion; at the same time, they also have proved to be players with great willingness to negotiate with the two major parties. Based on results of surveys, analysis studies on media coverage and political behavior of Latinos in the United States, this article evaluated the political influence of Latin vote before the outcome of the historic election that led Obama to the White House by analyzing Latin wishes and what Obama and McCain offered.
