Não obstante a mudança do perfil do eleitorado brasileiro, a discriminação etária, comum nas relações de trabalho, familiares e institucionais, também se faz presente no âmbito político. A partir do conceito de que todo indivíduo adulto é plenamente capaz para tomar decisões quanto aos rumos da sociedade em que vive, o presente artigo discute a facultatividade do voto garantido às pessoas com 70 anos ou mais, contraposto às normas e aos princípios de direitos humanos, hoje amplamente dispostos na recente Convenção Interamericana sobre a proteção dos Direitos Humanos da Pessoa Idosa.With the increase in the elderly population in Brazil and, consequently, in the percentage of voters over 60 years of age, the political participation of the elderly has become a topic of great importance for national democracy. Despite the change in the profile of the Brazilian electorate, age discrimination, common in work, family and institutional relationships, is also present in the political sphere.
