Desde seus primeiros textos, Robert Michels procurou delimitar as possibilidades da formação de uma vontade coletiva, na qual coincidissem os interesses dos dirigidos e dirigentes, na perspectiva democrática. Com a adaptação da socialdemocracia ao parlamentarismo, o autor formulou diversas críticas para a análise desse processo. A partir disso, elaborou uma teoria dos partidos que reforçou a crítica elitista ao sistema democrático, cujo centro é a ideia de que toda organização leva à oligarquia, isto é, à separação entre uma camada dirigente e uma massa de dirigidos.It analyses the process of formulating of the sociology of political parties of Robert Michels. We analyse this through the author's criticism of social-democracy. Since his first texts, Robert Michels tried to define the possibilities for the forming of a collective will, in which the interests of the rulers and the ruled would coincide, within a democratic framework. As social-democracy accommodated itself to parliamentarism, the author formulated several criticisms for the analysis of this process. .
