O envolvimento dos pentecostais na eleição de Collor

Abstract

No Brasil pós-ditadura as igrejas pentecostais, tradicionalmente afastadas da política, estão entrando ativamente na vida político-partidária. A eleição presidencial de 1989 foi um momento muito intenso de envolvimento eleitoral dos pentecostais. Resultado de uma pesquisa de campo, este artigo mostra que, para convencer os eleitores crentes a votar em Fernando Collor, as lideranças pentecostais usaram o argumento da ameaça: votar no Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) seria o mesmo que entregar o futuro de suas igrejas a uma tenebrosa aliança católico-comunista.Though traditionally removed from politics, Pentecostal congregations have become increasingly engaged in the political life of post-authoritarian Brazil. The presidential election of 1989 provided a particularly intense setting for electoral engagement by Pentecostal members. Based on field research, this article demonstrates how Pentecostal preachers sought to convince their followers to vote on Fernando Collor because of the threat represented by the alternative: voting on the Worker's Party (PT) would mean turning over the future of the congregations to a dangerous catholic-communist alliance.
