Periódico Suffragium - revista do Tribunal Regional Eleitoral do Ceará : vol. 13, n. 22 (jan./dez. 2022)(Tribunal Regional Eleitoral do Ceará, 2022) Tribunal Superior EleitoralArtigo Preparing the terrain : conditioning factors for the regionalization of the vote for federal deputy in São Paulo(2018) Silva, Glauco Peres da; Silotto, Graziele Cristina; Tribunal Superior EleitoralIt proposes a new interpretation of the regional distribution of votes in the dispute for legislative offices in Brazil. The literature has traditionally understood regionalization to be evidence that politicians deliberately create zones of influences in certain areas. It argues, however, that other dimensions of the Brazilian electoral system, notably the large size and magnitude of electoral districts, reinforce the information that reaches voters and adds value to geographic aspects, such as the home city of the candidates, accounting for the spatial concentration of votes. Using new, previously unpublished, data on the hierarchy of cities, the results for São Paulo between 1998 and 2014 confirm this interpretation. This result suggests a new theoretical understanding about how the brazilian political system works by introducing another explanation for how certain areas become influential, thereby revealing new research agendas.Periódico Paraná eleitoral : revista brasileira de direito eleitoral e ciência política : vol. 3, n. 2 (2014)(Tribunal Regional Eleitoral do Paraná, 2014) Tribunal Superior EleitoralArtigo Corporate dependence in Brazil's 2010 elections for federal deputy(2016) Mancuso, Wagner Pralon; Figueiredo Filho, Dalson Britto; Speck, Bruno Wilhelm; Silva, Lucas Emanuel Oliveira; Rocha, Enivaldo Carvalho da; Tribunal Superior EleitoralIt identifies factors that help explaining the level of corporate dependence among the candidates. It answers the question in relation to the 2010 elections for federal deputy in Brazil. It tests five hypotheses: 01. right-wing party candidates are more dependent than their counterparts on the left; 02. government coalition candidates are more dependent than candidates from the opposition; 03. incumbents are more dependent on corporate donations than challengers; 04. businesspeople running as candidates receive more corporate donations than other candidates; and 05. male candidates are more dependent than female candidates. Methodologically, the research design combines both descriptive and multivariate statistics. It uses OLS regression, cluster analysis and the Tobit model. The results show support for hypotheses 01, 03 and 04. There is no empirical support for hypothesis 05. Finally, hypothesis 02 was not only rejected, but we find evidence that candidates from the opposition receive more contributions from the corporate sector.Artigo Electoral success and political institutionalization in the federal deputy elections in Brazil (1998, 2002 and 2006)(2010) Bolognesi, Bruno; Perissinotto, Renato M. (Renato Monseff); Tribunal Superior EleitoralIt identifies the variables with the greatest impact on the chances of electoral success for candidates for the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 elections. Based upon data provided by the Supreme Electoral Court, this article firstly analyzes the relations between occupation, gender and level of education, on the one hand, and the electoral results (those elected and not elected), on the other. The article then presents a model of logistic regression in order to measure the real impact of these variables on the candidates chances of electoral success. The same procedure was repeated for the right, center and left-wing parties. We conclude that being a professional politician is the most important variable in determining the electoral success of a Federal Deputy candidate in Brazil, in the elections that were analyzed.Artigo Career choice and legislative reelection : evidence from Brazil and Colombia(2007) Botero, Felipe; Rennó, Lucio R. (Lucio Remuzat); Tribunal Superior EleitoralThis paper explores the differences and similarities between the electoral systems in Brazil and Colombia and how it affects Brazilian incumbent Federal Deputies and Colombian Diputados political career choices and electoral success. The main argument is that even though both electoral systems are, in general terms, quite distinct, they appear to produce very similar effects in career choices and reelection. The main cause of the effects found is that the institutional minutiae of the two electoral systems increase their similarities. Key words: Legislative Careers; reelection; electoral systems.Artigo A study on the impact of campaign finance, political capital and gender on electoral performance(2014) Speck, Bruno Wilhelm; Mancuso, Wagner Pralon; Tribunal Superior EleitoralThis article analyzes the association between political finance and electoral performance in the 2010 Brazilian elections for state and federal deputies. It also investigates the interaction effect of incumbency and gender on this association. We conclude: (i) there is a positive and statistically significant association between political finance and electoral performance, yet the intensity of this association varies according to the type of candidate; (ii) the association is stronger for challengers than for incumbents - thus extending the Jacobson effect to the Brazilian case; and (iii) the association is stronger for women than for men - which suggests an extension of the idea underlying the Jacobson effect. The association between finance and electoral performance tends to be stronger for candidates facing electoral disadvantages, whether these stem from limited political capital, gender discrimination, or any other factor not studied here resulting in a similar effect. Political finance works as a tool that, to some extent, may counteract the negative effect of such factors on electoral performance.
