    Political communication, television advertising and elections in Brazil : a longitudinal analysis of two major parties' use of free electoral advertising time

    A longitudinal analysis of the use of televised electoral advertising by the two political parties that have been the central actors in presidential elections in post-democratization Brazil: the Workers' Party (hereinafter referred to using the Portuguese acronym the 'PT') and the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (hereinafter referred to using the Portuguese acronym the 'PSDB'). The objective is to identify patterns and changes in Brazilian electoral advertising between 2002 and 2018 with reference to Brazil's system of free electoral advertising time (hereinafter referred to using the Portuguese acronym 'HGPE'), more of which has been allocated to these two parties than to any other. Despite the increasing use of other forms of electoral campaigning, HGPE is central to presidential contests and demarcates political time and parties' agendas. It is therefore relevant to understand how use of this campaign component has been developed over time, taking into account two factors: messages and strategies. The quantitative content analysis considers 90 days of PT and PSDB block format advertising during the first rounds of five election contests. The results reveal that changes in messaging tend to be decided on by the parties (with the PT emphasizing public policies and the PSDB emphasizing image building) whereas the strategies employed depend on the context of each election and are less specific to either party.

    Democracia interna nas legendas latino-americanas : uma análise dos estatutos partidários dos principais partidos brasileiros e argentinos

    Realiza uma análise do nível de democracia intrapartidária nos dois dos principais partidos brasileiros (PT e PSDB) e partidos argentinos (PJ e UCR). A pergunta que permeia análise é: até que ponto os membros conseguem ter controle da vida partidária? Para tanto é utilizado o método de mensuração proposto por von dem Berge, Poguntke, obert e Tipei (2013), em que é possível por meio dos estatutos partidários diferenciar três processos internos partidários: 1) Direito dos membros, 2) estrutura organizacional e 3) tomada de decisão. Sendo possível dessa forma observar quais aspectos da atividade interna dos partidos estão sendo democratizados.

    Analiza el comportamiento de las votaciones 2012 para alcalde em Campina Grande y SUS factores influyentes en la distribución del voto a partir de indicadores estadísticos. Se diseño um estudio descriptivo con enfoque cuantitativo y cualitativo con medidas resumen de la orientación y distribución del voto, ANOVA e indicadores estadísticos regionales utilizando los datos del Tribunal Superior Electoral.

    The 2014 elections and the brazilian party system

    The Brazilian party system presents a paradox. Although the Workers Party (PT) and the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) have controlled presidential elections for the last 20 years, their force at the other levels of electoral competition has not grown. The objective of this study is to undertake a discussion of this situation through the 2014 general elections. After attempting to explain why successive challengers have not been able to change the structure of competition for the Brazilian presidency, I will analyze the relation established between the pattern observed at this level and the other connected electoral disputes-both those for state executive and federal legislative office. The general conclusion is that even if the pattern continues, it is quite improbable that this will significantly impact the other levels of national political party competition.

    Inequalities and the brazilian new democracy : income distribution between classes in recent decades

    O elevado patamar das desigualdades de rendimentos tem, há muitas décadas, marcado a sociedade brasileira. No período de transição para a democracia, ainda na década de 1980, havia a expectativa de que o novo regime seria capaz de enfrentar as principais mazelas do país, a desigualdade sendo uma das principais delas. O presente artigo tem como objetivo verificar se houve redução das desigualdades de renda entre classes no Brasil entre os anos de 1995 e 2013, quando dois dos maiores e mais relevantes partidos políticos atuantes no país, o Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) e o Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), estiveram à frente do governo federal. Para tanto, serão utilizados dados da pesquisa Nacional por Amostras de Domicílios (PNAD-IBGE) referentes ao período abordado.
