La competencia electoral se caracterizó por la participación de dos grandes coaliciones mayoritarias: Juntos Hacemos Historia y Va por México, con Movimiento Ciudadano como tercera alternativa. Se encuentran modelos de socios mayoritarios en ambas coaliciones, que para Va por México dependen de los patrones de preferencias regionales, y para Juntos Haremos Historia se apegan al liderazgo nacional. Las dinámicas internas de las coaliciones abren la puerta a reflexiones sobre las motivaciones para coaligarse en el nivel subnacional.
