It carries out a descriptive analysis of the presidential and legislative elections in Costa Rica in 2022. Three atypical situations characterized this electoral process: the Covid-19 pandemic, the most significant number of candidates competing for the first round, and the election of Rodrigo Chaves Robles, an outsider figure of an emerging political party, the Social Democratic Progress Party. These elections were characterized by an unpopular outgoing executive and an absence of party loyalty ties in a high percentage of the electorate. It was the fourth time in Costa Rican history a ballotage was necessary to decide who would hold the position of the country's presidency. In this research, elements are developed to understand and analyze the eighteenth uninterrupted electoral process in one of the Latin American region's longest-lasting and most consolidated democracies.
