The fake news consumption on Facebook is part of the process of disseminating information about facts and events, mainly political ones, in contemporary digital environments. In this context, this study investigates the assessment that individuals do regarding the influence of fake news on others from data collected in closed groups dedicated to discussing political issues on Facebook. This research, therefore, intends to demonstrate the hypothesis of the third person effect in social media environments. The survey consisted of 1,653 questionnaires. The results confirm the perceptual component of the effect, that is to say, individuals believe that the others are more vulnerable then themselves in relation to fake news shared on Facebook. Besides, participants judged that fake news would be more influent to members of the opponent political group then to members of the same political group. Finally, the survey found the variable of political extremism to the effect is not relevant.
