âmbito do Ato Institucional nº 2.
The historiography on the 1964 military coup, despite continuously expanding, has been dedicating little attention to the role of the political parties in the process of political destabilization, escalation of the crisis and establishment of the dictatorship. In order to fill in this gap, we seek to contribute with a study on the behavior of the Minas Gerais section of the Social Democratic Party (PDS) at the state Assembly, where some of its major figures were directly involved in the conspiracies against president João Goulart, but with the main goal of furthering the return, by electoral means, of former president and PSD member Juscelino Kubitscheck. Despite complying with the military, as expected by them, the politicians of the Minas Gerais' PSD saw themselves defeated by the dictatorship, as the party went extinct by the Second Institutional Act in 1965.
