Do silêncio a uma voz : a princesa Isabel e a participação das mulheres no Império (1822-1889)

Abstract

A priori, o retrato da mulher do século XIX pode ser caracterizado pela submissão ao marido ou à entidade patriarcal, além da preocupação pelos afazeres domésticos. Ocorre que trata-se de uma visão distorcida, uma vez que muitas mulheres inclusive da alta sociedade estavam recebendo influências libertinas inglesas e francesas, criticando a sociedade que dera às mulheres mais obrigações do que direitos e buscando romper com uma postura inerte diante da submissão e ausência de direitos iguais. Por essas razões, o presente artigo visa identificar a participação política das mulheres no Império (1822-1889) a partir da análise documental do Projeto de Constituição para o Império do Brasil aprovado na Assembleia Constituinte de 1823, da Constituição Brasileira de 1824 e das demais legislações aprovadas nesse período. Ademais, este trabalho analisa também a participação da Princesa Isabel, a única mulher regente do Império no Brasil, no sentido de dar voz a esse período inicial tão silencioso no que concerne à participação política das mulheres no Brasil. Após essas análises, concluiu-se que não houve qualquer menção à participação política das mulheres, sendo que esse silêncio não deve ser interpretado como uma possibilidade de representação. Todavia, apesar das críticas e de um silêncio normativo para a participação política das mulheres, a Princesa Isabel exerceu um papel destacado na sociedade em que viveu, sendo a primeira mulher a governar o país, ainda que na qualidade de regente, servindo de inspiração para os novos períodos posteriores

Beforehand, the portrait of the woman of the century XIX can be characterized by the submission to a husband or to the patriarchal entity, besides the concern of household chores. It happens that it is a distorted vision, as soon as many women inclusive of the high society were receiving English and French libertine influences, criticizing the society that had given more obligations to women than rights and looking to break with an inert posture before the submission and absence of equal rights. For these reasons, the present article aims to identify the women s political participation during the period of Empire (1822-1889), from the documentary analysis of the Constitutional Project for the Empire of Brazil approved in the Constituent Assembly of 1823, of the Brazilian Constitution of 1824 and all other laws approved in this period. Besides, this paper analyses also the participation of the Princess Isabel, the only woman regent during the Empire, in the direction of giving voice to this so silent initial period in what concerns the women s political participation in Brazil. After theses analyses, it was concluded that there was no mention about the women s political participation during this period, being that this silence must not be interpreted like a possibility of representation. However, in spite of the criticism and a normative silence for the women s political representation, the Princess Isabel played an important role in the society in which she lived, being the first woman to govern the country, still as regent, serving of inspiration for the new subsequent periods
