O que é o conservadorismo? : do conceito à mensuração

Abstract

A história política, social e econômica do Ocidente é periodicamente marcada por crises e mudanças. Concomitante a esse processo, identificamos também o protagonismo das chamadas "ondas conservadoras". A despeito de ser um fenômeno recorrente desde o século XVIII, o desenvolvimento teórico e empírico sobre o tema dentro das Ciências Sociais, e especialmente a Ciência Política, segue tendo lacunas relevantes. Desse modo, este artigo tem como objetivo principal contribuir para esse tema de pesquisa. Nosso fio condutor parte da análise teórica do fenômeno - a partir de uma revisão bibliográfica crítica e aprofundada - seguida do desenvolvimento de ferramentas que contribuem para a tentativa de aplicar esse conhecimento à realidade atual. A instrumentalização foi feita a partir do banco de dados do World Values Survey (WVS) e aplicada para dois casos emblemáticos: Brasil e Estados Unidos.The political, social, and economic history of the West is periodically determined by crises and changes. At the same time, we also identified the advance of "conservative waves". Despite it being a recurrent phenomenon since the 18th century, the theoretical and empirical development on the subject within the Social Sciences, and especially within Political Science, continues to have relevant gaps. Hence, this article's main objective is to contribute to this research topic. Our path starts from the theoretical analysis of the phenomenon - from a critical and in-depth bibliographic review - followed by the development of tools which contribute to the application of this knowledge to the current reality. In the empirical application, we use the World Values Survey (WVS) database applied to two emblematic cases: Brazil and the United States.
