Resumo
A conquista do voto feminino foi importante para a evolução da ideia
de democracia. Propõe-se detalhar os movimentos sufragistas inglês e
estadunidense para demonstrar a importância de tornar o conceito teórico
mais aplicável à realidade. Utilizando pesquisa bibliográfica, analisaram-se
os anos de luta desses movimentos até o direito ao voto feminino. Objetiva-se
nortear os profissionais das ciências sociais e humanas, bem como a sociedade
brasileira, quanto às ideias de democracia e de direitos políticos das mulheres.
Os resultados revelam o papel essencial das sufragistas para a conquista do
voto feminino, porém tais movimentos foram insuficientes para o aumento
relevante da presença feminina no cenário político geral e para garantir a
participação de outros grupos excluídos nesses espaços.
The conquest of the female vote was important for the evolution of the idea of democracy. It is proposed to detail the English and American suffragette movements to demonstrate the importance of making the theoretical concept more applicable to reality. Using bibliographic research, we analyzed the years of struggle of these movements up to the right to female vote. The objective is to guide the professionals of the social and human sciences, as well as Brazilian society, regarding the ideas of democracy and women's political rights. The results reveal the essential role of the suffragettes to win the female vote, but such movements were insufficient to increase the relevant female presence in the general political scenario and to ensure the participation of other excluded groups in these spaces.
