A Gazeta de Notícias na primeira eleição direta. Rio de Janeiro - 1881

Abstract

Em 1881 a reforma eleitoral extinguiu o voto em dois graus que passaria a ser direto como nos dias atuais. Porém, a renovação do processo eleitoral retirou o direito de voto dos analfabetos e excluiu 99% dos brasileiros que participavam como votantes nas eleições. Mesmo sendo excludente, a Lei Saraiva, como a reforma se tornou conhecida, atraiu expectativas de renovação política tanto por parte de eleitores como de candidatos. Este artigo visa recriar as visões sobre a campanha para a primeira eleição direta, tendo como recorte espacial a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, através do jornal Gazeta de Notícias e das opiniões dos leitores que se tornaram os eleitores privilegiados nessa eleição.

Electoral reform in 1881 abolished the vote in two grades which would be direct as in the present day. However, the renewal of the electoral process removed the voting rights of the illiterate and excluded 99% of Brazilians who participated as voters in elections. Even being exclusionary, the Saraiva Law, as the reform became known, attracted renewed expectations of policy by both voters and candidates. This article aims to recreate the views on the campaign for the first direct election, focusing on spatial Rio de Janeiro, through the newspaper Gazeta News and views from readers who have become privileged voters in this election.
