Mulheres e espaço público : invisibilidade social feminina e o direito ao voto no Brasil

Abstract

Durante séculos, os interesses sociais relegaram a atuação da mulher ao espaço doméstico e a do homem, ao espaço público. Trata-se de uma ordem política que se ampara na construção de papéis sociais masculino e feminino fundamentalmente distintos e que delimita, inclusive espacialmente, a atuação do homem e da mulher. Este trabalho apresenta uma reflexão sobre a invisibilidade feminina, bem como sobre a atuação da mulher no espaço público, em um contexto de desigualdade de gêneros e consequente opressão e silenciamento das mulheres. Para discutir o lugar historicamente determinado à mulher na sociedade, serão analisadas as relações de poder estabelecidas na dicotomia entre os sexos masculino e feminino. A invisibilização social feminina, bem como suas lutas pela participação ativa na vida política são o cerne deste trabalho, com foco especial no cenário feminista brasileiro na primeira metade do século XX e na conquista do sufrágio feminino no Brasil.

"A woman in public is always out of place", said Pythagoras. For centuries, social interests have relegated women to domestic space and men to public space. It is a political order that relies on the construction of fundamentally distinct masculine and feminine social roles and which delimits, even spatially, the performance of men and women. This paper presents a reflection on female invisibility, as well as the role of women in public space, in a context of gender inequality and the consequent oppression and silencing of women. To discuss the historically determined place for women in society, the power relations established in the dichotomy between men and women will be analyzed. Women's social invisibility, as well as their struggles for active participation in political life, are at the heart of this work, with a special focus on the Brazilian feminist scenario in the first half of the 20th century and on the conquest of women suffrage in Brazil.
