A marcha, o terço e o livro : catolicismo conservador e ação política na conjuntura do golpe de 1964

Abstract

Discute a atuação política dos grupos conservadores que, em São Paulo e no Paraná, apoiaram a intervenção militar de 1964. Analisamos a Marcha da Família com Deus pela Liberdade. Concluise que, em Curitiba, o evento (rebatizado para Marcha a favor do Ensino Livre) priorizou a luta pelas liberdades individuais, deixando em segundo plano os valores tradicionais cristãos, diferentemente do enredo seguido em outras cidades. O caso em questão ilustra a complexidade da conjuntura ideológica no pré-1964, a natureza crítica das iniciativas do governo Goulart para levar adiante sua agenda reformista e as diferentes motivações não somente sociais, mas também regionais no engajamento da sociedade civil na campanha golpista.It discusses the political activity of the conservative groups in São Paulo and Paraná who supported the military coup of March 31, 1964.We analyze the March of Families with God for Freedom and conclude that, in the case of the march that was held in Curitiba (re-named March for Educational Freedom), priority was given to issues of individual freedom, relegating traditional Christian values to a secondary concern. The issue illustrates the complexity of the ideological conjuncture that preceded the 1964 coup, the critical character of the initiatives taken by Goulart s government in carrying out its agenda of social reform and the varying motivations, regional as well as social, underlying civil society s engagement in the campaign that promoted the coup d etat.
